I have a camp
to add to the list of Girl Scout camps! I was browsing through the
collection and saw that Camp Iwakta (pronounced Ee-wah-kee-tah) in Norfolk,
CT, was not listed. I was a camper at Iwakta in the early 1960s, when it
was relatively new. We had one platform tent unit with a pit latrine, a
rustic dining hall, and one smaller lodge. There was no waterfront, and we
were trucked to a nearby pond to swim. I believe the camp still belongs to
Housatonic Council in Bridgeport. (When I was a kid, it was called
Pequonnock Council.)
Camp Iwakta was my introduction to Girl Scout established camping, and I
loved it. A few years later, I was a counselor at Housatonic's Camp
Trefoil, which I see IS listed. When we lived in Palm Glades Council, FL, I
was a "regular" at Camp Welaka, where I was a CIT. Also have camped at
Rockwood National Girl Scout Camp (at the time) in Maryland, Camp Cedar Hill
in MA, Camp Glengarra in NY and a slew of others.

I have another camp for you. I believe the council was
Middlesex? Anyway, it was headquartered in Middletown, Connecticut. The camp
was called Nippewaukee, and it was in Hebron CT east of the
Connecticut River. I believe it might be the site that is now the Tallwoods
Country Club. Went there a couple years in the late 50s or early 60s. I now
live outside the US, but I still remember that camp. Cindie Marx |
