The Girl Scout Piper Project was launched with great fanfare on October 25,
1966 at the National Council Meeting (now called National Conventions) in
Detroit, Michigan. The 3-year Piper Project was devoted to retaining
membership in Girl Scouting and increasing membership among girls who had
never experienced Girl Scouting.
Bringing forth it's most notable celebrity troop leader - Mrs. Harry Karl,
aka Debbie Reynolds - was introduced as the Honorary National Piper. The Piper
Project team consisted of Miss Dephane Tabor (national staff), Mrs.J. Lucian
Smith (volunteer) and Ms. Reynolds.
All troop leaders were considered part of the Piper Project. The project was
heavily promoted in the Leader magazine during the following months.

I'm sending this scan of a patch that was
on a Girl Scout leader uniform that I just purchased on ebay. I thought
that other collectors might like to see it - so please share with them if
it comes out okay as an attachment. I just also wanted to let you know how
very much I enjoy your website and use it frequently when verifying
details on different Girl Scout vintage items for sale on ebay! Linda Poer

Piper Pin, image donated by Julia Kirvan
Official Piper
pins were handed out at the National Council Meeting to all adults and
Senior Girl Scouts. It is not known if this pin is the same as those
handed out. It does, however, have the official "Piper" logo.
This pin has been seen in
white and red versions also.
